Asian hornet
The Asian hornet (AH) is an insect classified as a pest, accidentally imported from Asia to France in 2004. Since then, it has progressively spread throughout Western Europe. It was first detected in Switzerland in 2017 and is currently spreading along the Rhône Valley.
The AH not only attacks the honey bee but also causes serious damage to overall insect biodiversity and to agriculture. It also represents a danger to the population, as its sting can be fatal.
The Canton of Valais has established a Task Force to curb its spread and destroy nests, which are particularly difficult to locate. Any suspicious observation of an AH or a nest must be reported on the website www.frelonasiatique.ch, if possible with supporting photos or videos.
The cantonal contact person for beekeeping is : Jacques-Olivier Haenni : nuisible@favr.ch
